To get
use the Internet you must be connected to the Internet. As
an Internet service provider SCR Online provides this "pathway"
to the Internet. But just signing up for your account does
not automatically establish your connection. You must setup
a dialer on your system. This document will offer instructions
for setting up a windows dialer from Dial Up Networking.
To see
a list of all our dial up numbers for California to use in
your dialer, refer to our Dial-up
Numbers List or use our new Call
Finder Tool! |
 |
| Instructions:
Note: Some images are thumbnails,
click to see larger picture. |
 |
| 1. Have your information sheet that was given to you when
you signed up in front of you. |
| 2. Make sure your computer’s modem is plugged into the
phone jack with a standard phone cable. Make sure you use the
plug that is labeled Line on the back of your computer. Some
modems have one connection labeled Line and one that is labeled
Phone. The phone may also have a picture of a telephone next
to it. Your computer will tell you if you are not getting a
dial tone when you try. If that happens, check the connections
and try again. |
| 3. Double click on My Computer from your Desktop. |
| 4. Double click on Dial-Up Networking. |
| 5. Double click on Make New Connection, a wizard will come
up. |
| 6. Type a name for the computer you are
dialing: SCR Online Dial up. You will
notice that your modem will be listed in the device area
and you should not need to change this at all. Click next. |
|
|
7. Type the phone number for the computer
you want to call: Area code: 707 then type one of the
phone numbers from your information sheet in the telephone
number area: 515-1350
8. Click the Next button and then the Finish button. |
|
|
9. You will then see a new icon in your Dial-Up Networking
window called SCR Online.
NOTE: If you
have other Icons for other providers such as AOL etc. you
can delete them by right clicking on the icon and selecting
Delete. Do not delete the Make New Connection or your new
SCR Online of course.
|
10. Now double click on the new SCR Online.
A new window will come up with blank spaces for username
and password. Type your username and password into the
fields by referring to your information sheet. Make
sure they are typed exactly as they are on the information
sheet. They must be absolutely correct to work.
You will want to click the little white box next to
Save Password. This will put a check mark in the box.
|
|
|
11. You will also notice the phone number below that and
then an area that say Dialing from:
Now this area probably says New location or something like
that. You need to make sure that the computer knows what area
code it is in. In the example above you can see that the area
code is before the number therefore the computer does not
know that it is in that area code so we know we have to tell
it that it is.
12. Click Dial Properties next to the location. You can
create a new location by clicking on New or you can just enter
the proper area code for this one in the Area code field.
This is also where you disable call waiting and other features
which most people don’t use. Type 707 in the Area Code
field and click OK.
|
|
13. Now you are ready to
test it, click the Connect button. You may hear the
modem dial the phone number and then the screeching
sound of the modem connecting to the dial up server.
You will see a status window that will tell you what
the dialer is doing: Dialing …. Connecting ….
Verifying Username and Password etc.
When the modem connects, it may pop up a new window
saying you are connected and giving you the option to
Disconnect or Status. You can just close this box by
clicking the x on the upper right of the window if you
like or you can leave it up. |
|
|
|
|
14. Notice in Task Tray (where your time is on the lower right
of your desktop) There are new icons there that look like small
computer monitors with lights going back and forth. That is
how you know you are connected. If you are ever unsure you are
connected, look there first. Right click on those little icons
in the Task Tray and select Disconnect. You may have to click
a Yes box to confirm you want to. |
| 15. The Dial Up Networking window should still be open, right
click on the SCR Online dialer and select Create Shortcut. A
window will pop up saying that Windows cannot create a shortcut
here, do you want it on the Desktop, Click Yes. You can now
close the Dial Up Networking window. You will now have a shortcut
on your desktop which you will double click on when you want
to connect to the internet. |
|
| 16. You are now ready to open your browser (Internet Explorer
or Netscape etc) and surf the web and/or open your email client
(Outlook Express, etc) and send and receive email. Go back to
the Support page for information
on setting up your email account. |
